چکیده

We present an experimental study of a topological excitation, interface, in a vertically vibrated layer of granular material. We show that these interfaces, which separate regions of granular material oscillating with opposite phases, can be shifted and controlled by a very small amount of additional subharmonic driving mixed with the harmonic driving signal. The speed and the direction of the interface motion depends sensitively on the phase and the amplitude of the subharmonic driving. [S0031-9007(98)08265-9]

Hexagons and interfaces in a vibrated granular layer

The order parameter model based on the parametric Ginzburg-Landau equation is used to describe high acceleration patterns in the vibrated layer of granular material. At large amplitude of driving both hexagons and interfaces emerge. Transverse instability, leading to the formation of ‘‘decorated’’ interfaces and labyrinthine patterns, is found. Additional subharmonic forcing leads to controlled...

Patterns in thin vibrated granular layers: interfaces, hexagons, and superoscillons

A theoretical and experimental study of patterns in vibrated granular layers is presented. An order parameter model based on the parametric Ginzburg-Landau equation is used to describe strongly nonlinear excitations including hexagons, interfaces between flat antiphase domains, and new localized objects, superoscillons. The experiments confirm the existence of superoscillons and bound states of...

Onset of flow in a horizontally vibrated granular bed: Convection by horizontal shearing

– We present experimental observations of the onset of flow for horizontally vibrated 3D granular systems. For accelerations Γ above Γ, the top layers of granular material flow, leading to convection with motion both parallel and transverse to the shaking; the lower part of the layer moves with the shaker in solid body motion. With increasing Γ, more of the layer becomes liquefied. The initial ...

Localized and Cellular Patterns in a Vibrated Granular Layer

We propose a phenomenological model for pattern formation in a vertically vibrated layer of granular material. This model exhibits a variety of stable cellular patterns, including standing rolls and squares as well as localized objects (oscillons and worms), similar to recent experimental observations [Umbanhowar, Melo, and Swinney, Nature (London) 382, 793 (1996)]. The model is an amplitude eq...

Granular Hydrodynamics and Pattern Formation in Vertically Oscillated Granular Disks Layers

A numerical hydrodynamic model of a vibrated granular bed in 2D is elaborated based on a highly accurate Shock Capturing scheme applied to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for granular flow. The hydrodynamic simulation of granular flows is numerically difficult, particularly in systems where dilute and dense regions occur at the same time and interact with each other. As an example of s...
